Rough road to Japan TPP agreement

Japan may have only just agreed to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (or
TPP),but the intention was to do so nearly two years back.Former Japanese
Prime Minister Yoishihiko Noda had announced Japan’s interest in joining the TPP
Agreement negotiations on November 11,2011.What caused the delay?And what do
the TPP negotiations mean for Japan?
The Trans-Pacific Partnership is a free trade agreement signed by Brunei,
Chile,New Zealand,and Singapore in 2005.It aims to further liberalize the
economies of the Asia-Pacific region.The most significant character of the
treaty is zero tariffs between the member states.At the end of 2009,the United
States formally joined the TPP.
Since then,the US has been suggesting that the TPP be expanded to include
more countries,in particular its closest ally in the Asia-Pacific region,
Japan.Trade promotion in the dynamic and ever-growing Asia-Pacific region has
been an essential underpinning of the US diplomatic strategy in the area.Japan
now agreeing to join the TPP negotiations is a significant boost to the US.
However,this has gone through severe scrutiny and debate in Japan.
The Japanese economy is split down the middle around the idea of joining the
trade negotiations.While the industrial sector supports the idea,the
agricultural sector opposes it.The fear is that the lowering of tariffs as
required by the trade agreement will rob Japan of what little remains of its
food security.All eyes will now be on the next TPP meeting in Peru in May to
see if Japan forms a part of those deliberations.
