Dear Father Leahy:
The American Society of Newspaper Editors believes in freedom of the press as defined by the First Amendment.We believe that freedom extends to the independent collegiate press as well.
Thus,we are concerned that Boston College,in its negotiations for a lease of building space,appears to be moving to censor and control the journalistic and business missions of The Heights.
ASNE,which includes more than 800 top editors of daily newspapers in the Americas,finds the prior restraints that you appear to be attempting to place on The Heights to be unacceptable.
We ask that you and your institution do the right thing:allow student journalists to operate a free press with all the rights and responsibilities that this entails.The independence of student press is a hallmark of great learning institutions such as yours; Boston College should not be an exception.
We appreciate your consideration of our position and the rights of the student journalists.Thank you very much.
