coughing and sneezing
listen to the following passage carefully, don't read the text while you are listening.Refer to it only when necessary
Cough is a sudden explosive expelling of air from the lungs through the mouth, when irritating substances enter any part of the repiratory system,a special set of nerves is stimulated. These nerves act to cause a short deep intake of air.The glottis,or opening of the larynx closes, this creates great air pressure in the lungs, suddenly, the glottis opens, and the captured air rushes out in a blast, pushing before it any foreign substance in its path.
A person can make himself cough whenever he wants, but he finds it difficult to stop a cough that results from irritating substances.
Sneezing is a sudden and violent rush of air out through the nose and mouth.A person has no control over sneezing. The body takes this action to get rid of irritating or harmful objects in the nose.Sensitive nerve endings that lie in the nose react to these objects by causing the sneeze.Sneezing occurs often in an element called Hayfever.Plant pollen lodges in the nose of sufferers and cause the sneeze.Bright sunlight can also cause sneezing, because the eye nerves are closely connected with nerve endings in the nose.Coughing and sneezing are important body defenses, because they help rid the breathing channels of harmful irritants, but they can also be harmful to other persons. For example,a person's nose fills with congestion that contains germs when he has a cold.Sneezing helps clear the nose, but unless the sneezer covers his mouth and nose, the germs escape into the air and may infect others.

dialogue A
D= Doctor,M= Mrs.Smith
D:Hello Mrs.Smith,I'm doctor Nelson.
M:Hello doctor,I've brought my daughter,Sally,in to see you.
D:What seems to be the matter?
M:About four days ago,she began to cough and sneeze, and complained of a sore throat,I figured it was nothing serious, just a cold, maybe. But today I took her temperature, and found it was 102,so I thought she'd better see a doctor as soon as possible.
D:Does she bring up anything when she coughs?
M:No,but she just coughs all the time.
D:Does she have a lot of sneezing?
M:Yes,she does,and I'm worried about her eyes,they're so red!
D:Does she sit in front of the light to read?
M:No,she doesn't,she told me that the light hurts her eyes.
D:Is Sally your only child?
M:No,I also have a son.
D:Does he have any of the problems Sally has had?
M:No
D:Do you know whether any of the children in the neighbourhood has had rashes or complaints similar to Sally's?
M:Well,no,I don't
D:Let's have a look at Sally, and then we can talk further.
Dialogue B
D= Doctor,S= Sally
D:Hi there,Sally.
S:Hi
D:How are you today?
S:My throat hurts.
D:Can I have a look?Lift your tongue to the roof of your mouth, that's fine! Now,I want to look in your throat with my mirror.
S:It hurts real bad!
D:Well,we hope that's going to go away real soon.Sally,I wanted to ask whether any of your friends have had a funny colour on their faces or arms.
S:Oh,billy did, after his cousin visited him,he got real sick at school.
D:Could you describe him for me?
S:He looked like somebody had sprinkled red paint on him,the teacher asked his mother to take him home.
D:How long ago was that?
S:Oh,I don't know.
D:Was it about two or three weeks ago?
S:I guess so.
D:Did you tell your mother about this?
S:No!I was afraid she wouldn't let me go over to Billy's to play.
D:Do you have any earaches,Sally?
S:A little ache now and then, but not now.
D:I see, well,Sally, you're going to do just what the nurses tell you?Aren't you?
S:Sure.
D:And we'll be in to see you again.Good bye!
S:Bye!
