For American cookbook author Cecilia Chiang, the best Chinese New Year celebrations of her childhood always started with a handmade red paper envelope of coins from her father, carefully tucked under her pillow.
And they continued with a two-week holiday from school,a new outfit and,of course, family dinners and festive food -- shark fin soup, stewed sea cucumbers, fish with ginger,a "red-cooked" pork roast, sticky rice balls and fresh kumquats and persimmons.
"Of all the many holidays on the Chinese calendar, none is as significant as New Year's," Chiang writes in her new cookbook-memoir,The Seventh Daughter:My Culinary Journey from Beijing to San Francisco (Ten Speed Press,2007,$42).
"The two-week holiday begins on the first lunar new moon of the year and ends 15 days later, and centres around celebrations with family, friends and food. But it's really all about renewal and optimism for the future."
