其实挺简单,
Opera originated in Italy but was not confined to Italy any more than the Italians were confined to Italy,
把省略掉的补上就好理解了,关键是这句话的意思不大符合汉语的思维模式,所以比较别扭.
断开来翻译,歌剧起源于意大利,但歌剧不局限于意大利,就像意大利人不一定在意大利一样.any more than 在这里的意思是就如同.

再答： What happende is that"....." 这是主句 "the major divde"(从句里的主语) 主要分歧 + in opera, 歌剧上的主要分歧，+ endures today, 持续到今天的歌剧的主要分歧， took place （从句里的谓语）意思是发生或者产生了，连起来就是整句话了
