In both Chinese and American cultures, flattery and praise are common and serve similar social functions. Their frequent usage is not only an expression of mutual appreciation but more importantly, promotes and strenthens the intimacy between the users. However, despite their similarities, there are differences between the two languages, especially in the application of the words in their context, and these differences usually become the source of misunderstanding in cross-cultural relationships.
