After a discussion（状语） they （主语）agreed to accept（谓语）whoever they thought was fit for the job （宾语从句）.
they thought是插入语,看句子成分时暂不考虑,于是宾语从句是：
whoever was fit for the job
是从句,所以主语必须是主格,不能是宾格,所以B,D都错.
而whoever既可以做主语,也可以作宾语.
fit是形容词,自然不能单独放在从句中,所以be fit for.适合.

如果表示过去式的话,应该是and ranked second...,两个动词之间不能什么都不加.

D.ranking,现在分词做伴随状语,表示它所表达的动作或状态是伴随着句子谓语动词的动作而发生或存在的.
