China’s second lunar probe Chang’e-2
China’s second unmanned lunar probe,Chang’e-2,successfully completed its third and final braking operation last Saturday.The satellite entered a 100- kilometre-high orbit around the moon.Soon after,it began its scientific exploration activities.
On National Day,powered by a Long March 3C carrier-rocket (“长征三号丙”运载火箭),Chang’e-2 blasted off from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre (西昌卫星发射中心),in Sichuan province.Chang’e-2 completed its first braking operation last Wednesday and the second braking operation last Friday.It was the first time that a Chinese lunar probe directly entered the earth-moon transfer orbit without orbiting the earth first.It greatly reduced the journey time from that of Chang’e-1.To obtain more detailed moon data,Chang’e-2 has entered a lower lunar orbit about 100 kilometres above the moon surface,compared with the 200-kilometre orbit of Chang’e-1.
A chief designer of China’s second lunar probe project pointed out that China’s pursuit of space flights was out of a sense of responsibility.“China has the responsibility to take part in these activities for peaceful use,” said the designer.“What we’re doing now is what some other countries already did 40 years ago.Surely,we will shorten the gap fast.”
Some 40 years ago,Russia and the United States were the only countries to have advanced space programs.Today China is also taking this path,step-by-step.
